Many moons ago when I started getting healthy, I had very little money. The first piece of equipment I bought was a medium resistance band. This was the only thing I had for YEARS! I learned how to make it work. I learned how to make moves easier and harder. I was content with this little thing.
Now, though, I have a few more pieces of equipment in my arsenal. Here are a few pieces of equipment I have in my own little home gym:
Resistance Bands
Foam roller, tennis ball, and deep-tissue roller
Stability ball
You don't need a lot to get started. In fact, you really don't need anything except motivation. If you're asking what one thing you should invest in for working out at home, I'd recommend buying a resistance band or a set of bands. These will take you far.
